Sustainable Development and LA21

What is sustainable development?

At a world level, the United Nations describe sustainable development as: 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'. To progress social, economic and environmental issues we have to accept that a certain amount of development is necessary. But to be sustainable we must make sure that the progress we make - and the way in which we develop - can be continued in the long term.

What is LA21?

LA21 or Local Agenda 21 quite simply means ‘a local agenda for the 21st Century’. Local Agenda 21 promotes the value of local people becoming involved in decisions about their future. It encourages us to look at a range of issues and asks us to consider what small changes we can make in our own lifestyles, to make a positive difference to everybody's quality of life and to the environment. Knowsley produced its Local Agenda 21 Strategy in 2000, called ‘Knowsley’s Tomorrow’.
